Now, for the postage stamp test - reduce to the size of a postage stamp (helps also to flip it).  Or, view it through squinted eyes.  Either way works to check the values/tonal structure.

In doing this we compare the relationship of form (three dimensional illusion - 3DI) to design (two dimensional pattern - 2D).  The form should predominate. We should be able to easily read the main subject matter of composition. But if the composition breaks up into abstract patterns, it means the design competes with the subject matter too strongly.  In that case, steps must be taken to weaken, subordinate, the design.

What do you think?  Does it pass the tests?  Hangs together well, or not?

I think it breaks up.  I would experiment with the framing.  Instead of white behind his torso, I would try black.

The delicate tones are beautiful, btw.

Thanks, in fact I did this illustration using as a reference an image of a painting by Archangel Michael, the later details I was adding intuitively, I confess I did not have a preworking, usually I do drawing intuitively.

Aha!  There are no excuses in Art, Jonas.  (Because none are necessary XD ;)  )

Yes, thumbnailing saves time and effort, but how many actually do it?  LOL. I work intuitively, too, which is bad when it causes me to start analyzing and correcting problems caused by lack of preparation.  So, I must do two things at once, plan and execute, which is frustrating at best and demoralizing at its worst.

The professional inker is trained to focus one on the finish, on the rendering.  If he doesn't rise above it, it takes a toll on him as a general artist.  It's not just about efficient work habits - thumbnailing to decide the best compositions, foresee problems and head them off, and set things up to execute without having to re-think the plan.  It's about seeing the big picture, achieving awareness of the principles of art and applying them effortlessly.  (After a period of learning and training exerting much effort!  haha.)

Of course you are!  I would not offer my opinions if I thought otherwise.  I know that as a professional inker you have precious little time to attend to your drawing and painting.  And I admire you for taking the time and making the effort.  That work is an end in itself - the reward, pure joy.  :D
